Figure Placement Test
The railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives this kind for the Power of Observation Test
The Figure Placement Test is kind 4d of the Power of Observation Test, fourth test of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives 60 questions in 7 minutes on one Time Left clock. Each question shows two sets of figures, set A and set B. You say whether each figure keeps its place in both sets, or how many moved: two, three or four. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave this kind for its battery, as the institute's records show. The test measures how fast and how accurately you notice a change of place.
One picture holds both sets, Set A left and Set B right. Four radio buttons A to D sit on one line. A is no difference; B, C and D are two, three and four moved. You compare place by place, count the mismatches, click the letter and move on. This page gives the screen flow, an example, a counting method, the mistakes and a 7-day plan. Figure Placement practice papers on this portal keep the 60 questions and the 7-minute clock; the first Full Mock is free after login.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Four radio buttons A to D; click one: A for no difference, B for two, C for three, D for four moved.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The test opens with instructions in Hindi and English and four example pairs of sets, answered A, B, C and D. The portal holds this screen for up to 5 minutes; Skip Instruction takes you straight to the first picture.
- 2
The question picture
Each question is one picture. Set A is marked over the left half and Set B over the right. The four radios A to D sit on the same line, and Time Left runs for the whole test.
- 3
Compare, count, click
Count the places where set B does not match set A, click the radio for your count and go to the next picture. The method below gives the walk.
- 4
Save & Next
The pictures come in parts; Save & Next closes a part and opens the next. The clock keeps running through the change, so hold one rhythm from the first picture to the sixtieth.
- 5
Submit and T-Score
Press Submit when you finish, or the clock submits for you at zero. On the portal the T-Score appears at once, and the review opens every question with its correct answer.
A worked example
- Problem 1: every figure stands in the same place in both sets, so there is no difference.
- Problem 2: two figures stand in different places.
- Problems 3 and 4: three and four figures stand in different places.
So the answers are A, B, C and D.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Fix a route for the places
Decide the route your eyes take before the clock starts, and keep it the same on every question, so no place is skipped or seen twice.
- 2
Walk set B against set A
Look at the first place in set A, then the same place in set B. Same figure, move on; a different figure, count one. Go to the next place and repeat to the end.
- 3
Turn the count into a letter
Zero mismatches is A. Two is B, three is C, four is D. No other count exists in this test.
- 4
Check once, then click
A count of one means you missed a place; a count above four means you counted a place twice. Re-walk once. Otherwise click the radio and move to the next picture without a second look.
6 tips that raise the score
1.Count places, not figures
Do not ask which figure moved. Ask, at each place, whether set B holds the same figure as set A. The number of mismatched places is the answer.
2.The count is never one
The RDSO guideline gives the choices as no difference, or two, three or four figures moved. There is no option for one. If your count is one, a second mismatch is waiting; look again.
3.Stop at four
Four mismatches is D, and the count cannot go higher. The moment you reach four, click D and move on; the rest of the places do not matter.
4.Click A only after a full pass
A question that looks the same at a glance still needs the full walk. Click A only when a full pass finds zero mismatches. That pass costs a few seconds and saves the mark.
5.Keep to 7 seconds a question
60 questions in 7 minutes is 7 seconds each. One walk, one click, Save & Next. If a question fights you, click your count and move on.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Hunting for the figure that moved instead of walking the places in order, which wastes seconds and loses the count.
- Stopping at one mismatch and clicking B without finding the second.
- Clicking A after a glance, when the mismatch sits at the far end of the set.
- Counting a figure as moved because it is drawn a little bigger or thinner, when it stands in the same place.
- Freezing on a hard question while the clock eats the time of three or four easier ones still to come.
A 7-day plan for the Figure Placement Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Work the four example pairs on the instruction screen until the letters A to D feel like counts. Then one paper on a laptop, no hurry. |
| Day 2 | Review Day 1 picture by picture. For each wrong letter, find the place you skipped or counted twice, and fix your route. |
| Day 3 | Route day: one paper with the same eye route on every picture, counting under your breath at each mismatch. |
| Day 4 | Two papers at the hall's pace, 7 seconds a picture. Click your count the moment it is certain; never hunt for which figure moved. |
| Day 5 | The free Full Mock, on a desktop, with the breaks and summaries between tests. Notice whether your route survives three tests of looking first. |
| Day 6 | Second attempt on the Figure Placement paper with your lowest T-Score; the higher of the attempts stands. Compare it with the Full Mock figure. |
| Day 7 | A last paper in the morning at 7 seconds a picture. Leave the evening free. The pass bar is 42; aim at 60. |
Questions students ask
▸What do the options A, B, C and D mean in the Figure Placement Test?
A means every figure stands in the same place in both sets. B means two figures have moved, C means three and D means four. The letters are counts, not names of figures.
▸Can there be only one difference between set A and set B?
No. The RDSO guideline gives the choices as no difference, or two, three or four figures moved. If your count is one, you have missed a place: look again.
▸Did the last RRB ALP exam give the Figure Placement Test?
Yes. The institute's records show that in the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave this kind for its battery. The hall may give any of the four kinds of the Power of Observation Test, so practise the other three kinds too. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives this kind again, so practise it first.
▸How much time do I get for each question in the Figure Placement Test?
The clock gives 7 minutes for 60 questions, which is 7 seconds a question. There is no clock per question; one Time Left clock runs for the whole test.
▸Is the Figure Placement Test hard?
The comparison is easy; the pace makes it hard. Marks are lost to a slip in the count under the clock, not to the figures themselves. A fixed route and the never-one rule remove most slips.
▸Does the Figure Placement Test have parts like the Memory Test?
No. It is one run of 60 questions on one 7-minute clock, with no study part and no break inside the test. In a Full Mock a short break with a summary comes only between tests.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
