Test 5 of 5 · RRB ALP CBAT
Perceptual Speed Test
The Perceptual Speed Test is Test 5 of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives one of five kinds: Similarity Test, Octagonal Test, Similarity Test Type-II, Same Circle Test or Same Figure Test. Every kind shows one figure and five options. The Similarity Test and Similarity Test Type-II want the one most nearly like it, figures in the first and objects in the second. The other three want the identical figure. The clock is short: Octagonal Test, 96 questions in 5 minutes; Same Figure Test, 72 in 8. It measures how fast and accurately your eye finds a small difference.
The given figure sits on the left, or above in the Same Figure Test. The five options, A to E, sit beside it or below it. You click the matching option for each figure; Save & Next saves the sheet or part on screen and opens the next, while the Time Left clock keeps running. The figures differ by kind: octagon patterns, circle figures, objects such as a radio, or plain figures. This page gives you the method, the mistakes that cost marks, a 7-day plan and candidates' questions.
The hall gives one kind for Test 5, with that kind's own count and clock (RDSO guideline, ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020). T-Score 42 or more is needed in this test, as in every test.

The 5 kinds of question in the Perceptual Speed Test
Test 5 has five kinds, and the hall gives only one of them. The kinds: Similarity Test (5a), Octagonal Test (5b), Similarity Test Type-II (5c), Same Circle Test (5d), Same Figure Test (5e). In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Same Figure Test, as the institute's records show. The railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives the Octagonal Test (5b): practise that one first.
| Code | Kind of question | What it asks | Questions | Time |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5a | Similarity Testसमानता परीक्षण | A figure on the left: which of the five on the right is most nearly like it? | 7218 × 4 | 6 min |
| 5b★ | Octagonal Testअष्टकोण परीक्षण | An octagon pattern on the left: find the identical one among five. | 96 | 5 min |
| 5c | Similarity Test Type-IIसमानता परीक्षण प्रकार-II | An object (a radio) on the left: which of the five on the right matches it? | 7218 × 4 | 6 min |
| 5d | Same Circle Testसमान वृत्त परीक्षण | A circle figure on the left: find the exactly similar one among A to E. | 60 | 8 min |
| 5e | Same Figure Testसमान आकृति परीक्षण | Find which of the five figures is identical to the one given. | 72 | 8 min |
★ The kind the railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives for this test. Each kind has its own page with a worked example, the method and a plan.
How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The instruction screen, in Hindi and English, carries a worked example of the kind's figures with the right answer. That example tells you which kind the hall has chosen; on the portal it allows 5 minutes and can be skipped.
- 2
Test screen and clock
The Time Left clock starts with the first question. The count depends on the kind. Similarity Test and Similarity Test Type-II: 72 questions (18 × 4) in 6 minutes. Octagonal Test: 96 questions in 5 minutes. Same Circle Test: 60 questions in 8 minutes. Same Figure Test: 72 questions in 8 minutes.
- 3
Click, Save & Next, next figure
Click the matching option for each figure. Save & Next saves the sheet or part on screen and opens the next one. In the two Similarity kinds that is four figures, in the other three a part of rows. There is no study part to memorise before the questions.
- 4
The clock submits
When Time Left reaches zero the test closes and every marked answer counts; a blank scores nothing. A quick answer on every question beats a careful one on half.
- 5
Scorecard and T-Score
In a Full Mock, a short break with a summary leads into Test 5, and submitting Test 5 ends the sitting. The scorecard out of 30 then appears with the T-Score of each test. In a practice paper the T-Score appears at once, with a review of every question and its correct option.
The method
- 1
Note the asking word on the instruction screen
Each kind asks for one thing. Octagonal Test and Same Figure Test: the identical figure. Same Circle Test: the exactly similar one. Similarity Test and Similarity Test Type-II: the one most nearly like the given figure or object, even when no option is a copy. The example shows why one option is right and four are wrong.
- 2
Pick the key in the given figure
Do not read the whole figure. Find one feature that is easy to see and easy to get wrong. A dot in one corner, a line that stops short, a mark on one side only. That feature is your key.
- 3
Sweep A to E, then confirm with a second detail
Sweep the options looking only for the key; options that miss it are gone. If one is left, mark it. If two are left, compare them on one more detail: the direction of a line, or the number of marks.
- 4
Mark it, move on, do not look back
Click and give the next figure a fresh look; press Save & Next when the sheet or part is done. Do not go back; a second look at a marked question costs a question you have not seen. If a figure will not settle, mark the closest option and move on.
6 tips that raise the score
1.Know your seconds for each kind
Similarity Test and Similarity Test Type-II: 5 seconds a question. Octagonal Test: a little over 3 seconds each, a sprint: pick the key, sweep once, click. Same Circle Test: 8 seconds, the slowest kind; spend the extra seconds on the second detail, not on re-checking. Same Figure Test: 9 a minute, under 7 seconds each.
2.Watch for the mirror image
A figure flipped left to right looks the same at a glance, and is not. If the given figure is not symmetric, note which side its mark sits on first. A flipped option fails that check at once.
3.Practise on the hall's screen, not a phone
On a phone the five options shrink and the deciding detail is hard to see. The hall gives you a desktop and a mouse, so sit practice papers and the Full Mock on a laptop or desktop.
4.Test 5 comes when you are tired
It is the last of the five tests, and careless clicks gather in its closing minutes. The free Full Mock, all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing, lets you practise this test tired.
5.Sort your wrong clicks in the review
The review shows every question beside its correct option. Sort your wrong clicks into mirror images, missed keys and rushed guesses, and fix the largest group first. A practice paper allows up to 3 attempts and the highest T-Score counts.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Reading the whole figure on every question instead of the one detail that separates the options.
- Marking the mirror image: same shape, same marks, on the wrong side.
- Going back to a marked answer: the clock does not stop, and the unseen questions pay for it.
- Pausing on a figure that looks hard; the clock runs on.
- Practising only the Same Figure Test because it came last time; the hall may give any of the five kinds.
- Treating every kind the same way: the closest option wins in the two Similarity kinds, and only the exact copy wins in the other three.
A 7-day plan for the Perceptual Speed Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Read all five instruction screens on the portal and their examples. Sit one Same Figure Test practice paper without chasing the clock, picking a key on every question. |
| Day 2 | Same Figure Test at full pace: 72 questions in 8 minutes, 9 a minute. In the review, mark every wrong click that was a mirror image. |
| Day 3 | Similarity Test and Similarity Test Type-II, one paper each: 72 questions in 6 minutes. In the Similarity Test the answer is the option most nearly like the given figure, not a copy. In Similarity Test Type-II the same rule applies to drawings of a radio: the closest of the five, not a copy. |
| Day 4 | Octagonal Test: 96 questions in 5 minutes. Aim to reach the last question with the method intact. |
| Day 5 | Same Circle Test: 60 questions in 8 minutes. You have time for the second detail on every question, so aim for no wrong clicks. |
| Day 6 | Free Full Mock on a laptop or desktop: all five tests in one sitting. Read the Test 5 T-Score on the scorecard and compare it with 42 and 60. |
| Day 7 | Second or third attempt of the two kinds with the lowest T-Score. Then rest. |
Questions students ask
▸Which kind of perceptual speed test comes in the ALP psycho test?
Any one of its five kinds; the hall does not say which in advance. You learn the kind from the instruction screen's example on the day. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Same Figure Test, as the institute's records show. The railway's mock link for CEN 01/2025 gives the Octagonal Test (5b).
▸How many questions are in the RRB ALP perceptual speed test?
The Similarity Test, Similarity Test Type-II and Same Figure Test have 72 questions each. The Octagonal Test has 96 and the Same Circle Test 60. The clock runs from 5 minutes to 8, by kind.
▸Is there a study part in the Perceptual Speed Test?
No. Unlike the Memory Test, Test 5 has nothing to memorise first. The Time Left clock starts with the first figure and runs to the last, and the only thing between you and the next figure is one click.
▸What does the perceptual speed test measure?
How quickly and how surely your eye picks one small difference out of figures that look alike. Your T-Score compares your marks with everyone who sat the same paper, so accuracy counts as much as speed.
▸How do I get faster at the RRB ALP perceptual speed test?
Sit every paper at the hall's clock, not slower: speed comes from the key-and-sweep method, not from reading faster. Open the review after each paper and remove one cause of wrong clicks at a time.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
