Same Figure Test
The Same Figure Test is kind 5e of the Perceptual Speed Test, the fifth test of the RRB ALP CBAT. The hall gives 72 questions in 8 minutes on one Time Left clock: 9 questions a minute, under 7 seconds each. Each question gives a figure, and below or beside it five figures A to E. Only one is identical, and you mark its letter. It measures how fast your eye picks the true copy out of the five, and whether that pace lasts all 72 questions.
On screen ten questions come to a part. Mark one letter on each, and Save & Next carries you to the next part. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave this kind for Test 5, as the institute's records show. Below, the screen step by step, with the RDSO guideline's three examples. Then a method that fits inside 7 seconds, the clicks that lose marks, and a week's plan with the free Full Mock.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Five figures A to E; mark the letter of the one identical to the given figure.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The instructions come up in Hindi and English with three example rows and their answers. On the portal you have 5 minutes here and a Skip Instruction button, so one careful reading is enough.
- 2
The question screen
The test screen shows each question's figure and, below or beside it, five figures lettered A to E. Ten questions come to a part.
- 3
One click is the answer
Find the figure that matches the given one stroke for stroke. Mark its letter; that is your whole answer.
- 4
Ten rows, then Save & Next
Save & Next saves the rows on screen and opens the next part. One Time Left clock runs through all 72 questions, with no break inside the test.
- 5
Submit, then the review
Press Submit after question 72, or let the clock submit for you at zero. On the portal your T-Score appears at once, with the correct letter beside every row.
A worked example
- Example 1: the given figure and five figures A to E. Only one of the five is identical to the given figure.
- Examples 2 and 3 are set out the same way: one given figure, five options, one true copy among them.
In the RDSO guideline's example the answers are A, B and D for examples 1, 2 and 3.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Read the given figure once
Look at the given figure and say what it is made of. How many strokes, which way the open side faces, where any dot or mark sits. Those three facts describe the whole figure.
- 2
Choose one anchor
Pick the feature a near copy most often changes: where the dot sits, or which way an open end faces. Check that alone, not the whole figure.
- 3
Sweep A to E on the anchor
Run your eye across the five options and drop every one that fails the anchor. If one option is left, that is your answer. If two remain, check a second feature on those two only.
- 4
Click and move on
Click the surviving letter and let the eye fall to the next given figure. A finished row is finished; looking back buys nothing and costs a question.
7 tips that raise the score
1.Under 7 seconds a question
Give each row one glance at the given figure, one sweep across A to E, one click. A row that needs a second sweep is a row to practise.
2.Identical, not nearly the same
A mirror image or a figure with the dot moved is there to draw a quick click. The true copy matches in every stroke and every mark.
3.Compare with the given figure
Two options can look alike and both be wrong. Judge each option against the given figure, never against its neighbours. If two survive the anchor, return to the given figure once for a second feature.
4.Hold the row
The screen scrolls and 72 rows pass quickly. Read the question number before every click. A letter marked one row off can cost two marks.
5.Keep the eye path fixed
Go given figure, A, B, C, D, E, click, in the same order on every row. A fixed path stops the eye wandering back and forth and keeps the 7-second rhythm.
6.Train for tired eyes
Test 5 comes last in the CBAT, after four tests have already worked your eyes. In the free Full Mock it comes last too. Sit it there and learn how your pace holds when tired.
7.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Taking a flipped figure, the open side or the dot on the wrong side, for the true copy.
- Comparing the whole figure with each option when one anchor feature would have settled the row.
- Going back to re-check finished rows and reaching Time Left zero with rows still unseen.
- Reading the ten rows of a part as one picture before starting, instead of taking them one row at a time.
- Spending too long on one confusing row instead of clicking the most likely letter and moving on.
- Trusting the overall shape and skipping the dot, when the dot is the only thing that differs in the row.
A 7-day plan for the Same Figure Test7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Meet the test. Read the instruction screen, then work the RDSO guideline's three examples until A, B and D are obvious. Then sit one practice paper with the 8-minute clock on a laptop or desktop, like the hall's screen. |
| Day 2 | Review day. Open yesterday's review and sort each wrong answer: mirror taken, dot missed, row slipped, row never reached. The biggest heap is your work for the week. |
| Day 3 | Anchor day. Sit a fresh paper and fix one anchor feature on every row before you sweep A to E. Accuracy first; the clock may beat you today. |
| Day 4 | Pace day. Paper one: when Time Left hits zero, note how many rows you reached. Paper two, straight after: close that gap so question 72 is on screen before the clock runs out. |
| Day 5 | Sit the free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing. Test 5 comes last, so watch your pace once your eyes are tired. |
| Day 6 | Read the Full Mock scorecard and the Test 5 review. Re-sit the paper with your lowest T-Score; each paper allows up to 3 attempts and your highest T-Score counts. |
| Day 7 | Last paper of the week at hall pace, then no more screens. Line up the week's T-Scores: each one at 42 or above, and the last ones nearer 60 than the first. |
Questions students ask
▸How many questions are in the Same Figure Test and how long is it?
72 questions in 8 minutes, all on one Time Left clock with no part break. The portal's practice papers keep the same count and clock, so your paper pace is your hall pace.
▸What does a Same Figure Test question look like?
A figure is given, and below or beside it stand five figures A to E. One of the five is identical, stroke for stroke; a mirror image or a figure with the dot moved is the kind of wrong option placed to catch you.
▸Did the last RRB ALP exam give the Same Figure Test?
Yes, as the institute's records show: in CEN 01/2024 Test 5 came as this kind. The hall can still give any of the five kinds, so practise the other four too. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives the Octagonal Test (5b) instead, so practise that first and keep this one ready.
▸What is the difference between the Same Figure Test and the Similarity Test?
Both belong to the Perceptual Speed Test and give 72 questions. The Similarity Test asks for the figure most nearly like the given one, in 6 minutes. The Same Figure Test asks for the one identical figure, in 8 minutes; a close likeness is wrong here.
▸Is a mirror image counted as the same figure?
No. The question asks for the identical figure, and a mirror image or a figure with the dot moved is a wrong option placed to catch you. Every stroke and mark must sit exactly where it sits in the given figure.
▸How do I get faster at the Same Figure Test?
Stop comparing whole figures. Fix one anchor feature, sweep A to E on that alone, and click. Sit practice papers with the 8-minute clock until the sweep fits inside 7 seconds.
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
