Similarity Test Type-II is kind 5c of the Perceptual Speed Test, Test 5 of the RRB ALP CBAT. It is the Similarity Test drawn with objects, not abstract figures; the RDSO guideline's example uses radios. Like the Similarity Test it runs 72 questions in 6 minutes on one Time Left clock, 18 sheets of four. The difference is what you compare: object a is a radio, and A to E are five radios drawn a little differently; the closest drawing is the answer. The test measures how quickly your eye spots the difference between near copies of a familiar object.
On screen one sheet sits on the left. Four radios run down it, lettered a to d, each with its row of five drawings. On the right are that sheet's four questions, 1 to 4, with option buttons A to E. You click one letter for a, b, c and d, then press Save & Next for the next sheet. This page walks you through the screen and the RDSO guideline's worked example. It gives a method for the five-second question, the mistakes that cost marks and a 7-day plan.
The hall's own count and clock, as the RDSO guideline (ALPs Guidelines CBT, Jan 2020) gives them. Four questions, 1 to 4, for objects a to d; click one option button A to E in each.

How the test runs on screen
- 1
Instruction screen
The screen opens in Hindi and English with one example sheet of radios, the right letters already marked. The portal allows 5 minutes here and shows a Skip Instruction button for when you are ready.
- 2
One sheet, four objects
One sheet opens on the left: four radios down the page, lettered a to d. Beside each is a row of five radios, A to E, differing in a dial, a knob or an aerial.
- 3
Questions 1 to 4 on the right
On the right are the sheet's four questions, numbered 1 to 4 for a to d. Each has option buttons A to E; one click per radio.
- 4
Save & Next, sheet after sheet
When question 4 is clicked, Save & Next brings sheet 2 with questions 5 to 8, and so on until sheet 18 closes at question 72. The Time Left clock belongs to the whole test, not to a sheet, and nothing pauses it.
- 5
Submit, T-Score, review
After sheet 18 press Submit, or let the clock submit for you at zero. A practice paper on the portal shows your T-Score at once and opens every sheet in review with its correct letters.
A worked example
- Look at the first radio, a, at the left. Which of the five at the right is most nearly like it? Radio B.
- For the second radio, b, the answer is radio C.
In the example of the RDSO guideline the answers for a, b, c and d are B, C, A and D.
The method: how to attempt a question
- 1
Pick one part of the object
Look at object a and choose one clearly drawn part: the dial, a knob or the aerial. Note how it is drawn, where it sits and how many there are. Ignore the rest of the radio.
- 2
Test the five for that part alone
Move along A to E and ask each drawing one question: is that part the same? Most of the five fail at once. If none passes, even the right answer differs in that part, so pick a second part and test again.
- 3
Two radios left: look at one more part
When two drawings pass on the dial, compare only those two on a knob or the aerial. Whichever keeps both parts is the answer; click it without a third check.
- 4
Answer 1 is radio a, answer 4 is radio d
After each click move your eye to the next radio and your hand to the next question. Then a stays with 1 and d with 4. When question 4 is clicked, press Save & Next for the next sheet.
6 tips that raise the score
1.Do not trust the glance
At a glance all five read as the same radio, because you know what a radio looks like. That glance is the trap. The differences sit in small parts, so look at parts, never at the whole.
2.Count what can be counted, place what can be placed
Knobs can be counted. A dial sits left or right. An aerial stands straight or slants. Things you can count or place are quicker to check than the curve of a line.
3.Four radios, four separate questions
Do not carry a finding from radio a to radio b. The part that settled a may be the same on all five drawings of b. Choose the part afresh for every row of the sheet.
4.20 seconds a sheet
Six minutes for 18 sheets is 20 seconds a sheet. Spend them as four quick checks of one part each, not one long look at four radios. When a sheet passes 20 seconds, click the letters you lean to and press Save & Next.
5.Read the example sheet as a lesson in parts
The instruction screen's radios show which parts differ between the five drawings: a dial moved, a knob dropped, an aerial tilted. Note those parts before the clock starts; they are the ones to check first on every sheet.
6.Practise on a laptop or desktop
The portal works on a phone too, but the exam hall is a desktop screen with a mouse. Sit every practice paper and Full Mock on a laptop or desktop, so the screen, the mouse and the pace are the ones you will meet on the day.
Mistakes that cost marks
- Judging the five by the overall look of the radio instead of the one part that differs.
- Losing the row after a slow sheet, so the answers for c and d land one question too high.
- Hunting for a radio drawn exactly like object a, when the question only asks for the closest of the five.
- Giving a doubtful sheet a third look instead of clicking the likeliest letters and pressing Save & Next.
- Leaving the last sheets blank, when a quick click may earn a mark.
A 7-day plan for the Similarity Test Type-II7
| Day | What to do |
|---|---|
| Day 1 | Open the instruction screen and the example sheet of radios. Work out why B, C, A and D are right by naming the part that decides each one. Then sit one paper on a laptop with the hall's clock running, without worrying about the score yet. |
| Day 2 | Review the Day 1 paper. Separate the wrong answers where you judged the whole radio from those where the row slipped. The first group needs the parts method; the second needs the row habit. |
| Day 3 | Fresh paper. On each sheet pick the part before you look right: dial, knob or aerial. Count the sheets that needed a second part to settle a tie. |
| Day 4 | Two papers back to back on the laptop. Sit the first without chasing the clock, even if the last sheets go unanswered. Sit the second at the hall's 5 seconds a question and reach sheet 18 before Time Left runs out. |
| Day 5 | Free Full Mock, all five tests in one sitting. Afterwards ask whether Test 5, whichever kind it gave, still read as parts or had turned back into whole figures. |
| Day 6 | Second attempt of your lowest Type-II paper; the highest of up to 3 attempts counts. Then one Similarity Test paper with abstract figures, since the hall may give any of the five kinds of Test 5. |
| Day 7 | Last paper of the week at 20 seconds a sheet, then close the laptop. A rested eye on the day is worth more than one more paper. |
Questions students ask
▸How many questions are in the RRB ALP Similarity Test Type-II and how much time is given?
72 questions in 6 minutes: 18 sheets with four radios on each, which is 20 seconds a sheet. One Time Left clock runs the whole test, and the portal's Type-II papers keep the same count and clock.
▸What is the difference between the Similarity Test and Similarity Test Type-II?
Only the drawings differ. The Similarity Test, kind 5a, uses abstract figures; Type-II, kind 5c, uses an object, radios in the RDSO guideline's example. The count, clock, sheet and rule are the same.
▸Which objects come in Similarity Test Type-II?
The RDSO guideline's example sheet shows radios. The five drawings differ in small ways: a dial's place, an aerial's angle, a missing knob.
▸Did the last RRB ALP exam give Similarity Test Type-II?
No. In the last exam (CEN 01/2024) the hall gave the Same Figure Test (5e), as the institute's records show. Any of the five kinds may come, so practise Type-II along with its siblings. For CEN 01/2025 the railway's mock link gives the Octagonal Test (5b).
▸Is there negative marking in the RRB ALP psycho test?
No. The CBAT has no negative marking. Attempt every question; an unanswered question is a mark lost for certain.
▸What T-Score do I need to pass?
A T-Score of at least 42 in each of the five tests of the CBAT. The portal shows your T-Score on every paper the moment you submit, measured against everyone who sat it.
▸Can I practise on my phone?
Yes, the portal runs on a phone. But the CBAT is taken on a desktop with a mouse, so Kautilya Classes advises every student to sit the practice papers and Full Mocks on a laptop or desktop: the same screen, the same mouse, the same pace as the hall.
▸How do I practise this test on the portal?
Every account gets one free Full Mock after login: all five tests in one sitting with the hall's timing and a scorecard with your T-Score in each test. Practice papers of every kind, with the hall's count and clock, come with a Kautilya Classes package. New students message the team on WhatsApp; Kautilya Classes students get their login from the institute.
